Teaching & Leadership
Since joining the University of Kent in 2019, my teaching practice has expanded to include strategic development and planning. In my four years as Director of Graduate Studies, I guided the postgraduate taught programmes through the pandemic, two restructures, and national union action, as well as a wholesale curriculum review and the introduction of a new University wide three term teaching model. Through these experiences, I have developed a more nuanced understanding of what it is to be a contemporary academic who is a good teacher, a supportive colleague, and a dedicated researcher.
Supervision
I am interested in supervising PhD students engaging with popular culture and international relations, including projects associated with security studies, post-truth politics, aesthetics, embodiment, and the imagination.
If you are interested in working with me please contact me through the form on this page.

Lee’s research project examines how the United States perceives Britain’s status within the ‘special relationship’ a decade after the Brexit referendum. Using a constructivist approach, it applies status theory and discourse analysis to explore the political, social, and strategic dimensions of Britain’s standing. The project offers new insights into how Britain’s status is performed, contested, and reshaped within its most significant bilateral relationship.
This project builds on Lee’s significant experience working in financial markets around the globe. He is currently Chief Strategy Officer of Saudi Tadawul Group.

Ugo’s doctoral (2019-2023) investigated how the securitization of Islam changes across right-wing and left-wing political parties in Britain, France and Italy. Ugo's thesis argues that securitization has been translated from the Right to the Left in the name of different ideas and using a distinct language. His work contributes to current research on Islamophobia and the rise of the far-right in the West as well as to critical analysis of security.
Ugo is now aLecturer in the Department of Criminology, Politics and Sociology at Kingston University London.
